Support climate crisis film – Settle’s local MP has been asked to support the televising of film about the climate crisis by Settle’s climate emergency group (ACE). The Group has written to Skipton and Ripon’s MP Sir Julian Smith, asking him to sign Early Day Motion (EDM 93) in Parliament which calls for a UK-wide showing on television of a film about the climate crisis.
The initiative comes from a cross-party group of MPs, led by Andrew George MP the Liberal Democract member for St Ives in Cornwall and was supported by 63 MPs on 20 May a week after it was published.
The film features footage from last November’s National Emergency Briefing, which brought together leading UK experts in climate science, food security, health, economics, national security and nature. It presents a clear, measured overview of how the climate and nature crisis is affecting everyday life in Britain – and what the evidence says about risks and responses.
Sarah Wiltshire from ACE said: “We are asking Sir Julian to sign the early day motion which calls for a televised emergency briefing risks we face, and of the opportunities and benefits available if we respond with the urgency and scale required.”
ACE is currently planning to hold a showing of the film at St. John’s Methodist Church, Church Street, Settle on Thursday 17 September at 7pm.
Meanwhile an official UK parliamentary petition has been launched calling for a UK-wide public briefing from independent experts on the risks posed by climate change and nature loss. It aims to reach 100,000 signatures in order to secure a Parliamentary debate,
generate media attention, and significantly raise the profile of the National Emergency Briefing in Parliament.
