October’s Green Cafe: AGM & talk by The Man in Seat 61
Join us from 10.30am to chat about topical issues over Fairtrade tea, coffee and biscuits, followed by:
- 11-11.45 Annual General Meeting: hear about what we have been doing and plan to do over the coming year. Get more involved with our work & volunteer for our steering group (arrange a chat beforehand to find out more by emailing us on acesettleandarea@gmail.com). Followed by notices.
- 11.45-12 Video interviews of Settle-Carlisle people talking about their time on the railways, and its impact on communities.
- 12 Noon-1pm: our guest speaker this year is Mark Smith (bio below) of Seat61, speaking about our changing and evolving railway service. With his many years of working out how to travel by train in the UK, mainland Europe and Worldwide, Mark is now enabling millions of people to have a different travel experience by sharing his knowledge of how to replace the plane with the train. Come and be inspired!
Whilst this is a free event, all welcome, there will be a leaving collection in support of Seat61’s UNICEF children’s appeal.
Available throughout the morning: a recycling box for blister packs (only available at Green Cafes, so please come into the Cafe and use the recycling box rather than leaving blister packs in the foyer of the Methodist Church). A bag for used toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes.

More about Mark…currently running the train travel website The Man in Seat 61, Mark is a career railwayman who joined British Rail in 1987 and was the Station Manager for Charing Cross and London Bridge in the 1990s and later Customer Relations Manager for two privatised train companies. In the 2000s he worked for the Department for Transport managing the fares & ticketing team. In 2001, Mark set up a website called The Man in Seat 61 to help travellers book train travel around Europe and worldwide. With up to 1 million visits per month, he has run this full time since 2007.
