SUMMARY:Climate Justice: What it is\, Why it Matters
DESCRIPTION:Whilst the climate crisis is being caused by wealthy and industrialised countries\, the greatest impacts are being experienced by countries with very low individual carbon footprints. These countries also have the fewest resources for dealing with these impacts. Hear more from Izzie about this key issue and Global Justice Now’s campaign to make sure that compensation is paid by the big polluting corporations\, as part of the international compensation fund agreed at the annual world climate conference in 2022 (COP27). \nEvent Timings:\n10.30-11am Green Cafe: chat over fairtrade teas\, coffees and biscuits about topical climate crisis issues\, ACE’s work and how to get involved. \n11.00 – 12.15pm Izzie’s talk and Q&A \n12.15-12.30pm Closing remarks and notices \nAbout Izzie MacIntosh – Izzie is the Climate Campaign Manager at Global Justice Now. Since starting in the role\, her work has focused on targeting corporate polluters and their climate-wrecking activities. Before joining the climate movement\, Izzie was a migrant justice campaigner\, focusing on immigration detention and deportations. This included being part of the team that brought the first legal challenge against the UK government’s policy to forcibly remove people seeking refugee protection to Rwanda. \nAbout Global Justice Now – GJN is part of a global movement to create a more just and equal world – mobilising people in the UK for change\, and acting in solidarity with those fighting injustice\, particularly in the global south. In addition and linked to the climate crisis\, GJN is also currently campaigning on the impacts of ‘Big Pharma’ and corporate courts – tribunals held in secret that influence what is included in trading rules. \nYou can read more and get involved with Global Justice Now here: globaljustice.org.uk  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Stop Food Waste Day
DESCRIPTION:Stop Food Waste Day is the largest single day of action in the fight against food waste. \nStarted in 2017 by Compass Group USA\, Stop Food Waste Day is now recognised globally in every corner of the world as we unite to educate and ignite change. \nDid you know\, one third* of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally? Food waste is central to some of the key challenges facing the world today\, including hunger and poverty\, climate change\, health and wellbeing and the sustainability of agriculture and oceans. Wasting food is also a waste of the energy to grow\, harvest\, process and cook\, and food waste in landfill can cause methane emissions\, a potent greenhouse gas. *Source: World Food Programme \nIt’s easy for everyone to get involved with reducing the impact of food waste\, not just on Stop Food Waste Day\, but day in\, day out – both in our personal and professional lives. \nFind out more and get involved here.

SUMMARY:No Mow May
DESCRIPTION:No Mow May is Plantlife’s annual campaign calling on all garden owners and green space managers not to mow during May. \n\n\n\n\nWhy do we need No Mow May? \nWe’ve lost nearly 97% of flower-rich meadows since the 1930’s and with them gone are vital food needed by pollinators\, like bees and butterflies. \nBut your lawn can help! A healthy lawn with some long grass and wildflowers benefits wildlife\, tackles pollution and can even lock away carbon below ground. Best of all\, to reap these benefits all you have to do is not mow your lawn in May and beyond! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to take part \nWith over 20 million gardens in the UK\, even the smallest grassy patches add up to a significant proportion of our land which\, if managed properly\, can deliver enormous gains for nature\, communities and the climate. \nThis is why Plantlife calls for people to get involved with #NoMowMay every year\, and let wild plants get a head start on the summer. \nFind out how to get involved here.

SUMMARY:Fairtrade Coffee morning
DESCRIPTION:We look forward to seeing you at our fairtrade coffee morning.\n\nJoin us for fairtrade tea\, coffee and fairtrade biscuits: cookies\, flapjacks and brownies\, well worth a try!\n\nThere will be a fair trade stall at which to buy a range of fairtrade products – edible and inedible! \n\n\nFairtrade is now thirty years old and Settle became a fair trade community\, accredited by The Fairtrade Foundation\, in July 2023 and since then has held a variety of events.\n\nAs part of this year’s activities ACE’s Food Group is running a ‘Fairtrade 90kg Rice Challenge’. This is how much a subsistence farmer has to sell in order to pay for one year’s secondary school education.  Education is very expensive for them. We have one year to complete the challenge and rice will be available from Melanie at this event and our regular Green Cafes. 1kg bags of either white or brown cost £4.00.\n\nYou can also find out more about fairtrade and join in during Fairtrade Fortnight (9th-22nd September) – with this year’s campaign ‘Make Your Mark’.  We encourage everyone to change one product that they buy regularly to a Fairtrade one.  There are now 5\,000 Fairtrade products available in the UK\, including cooking oils and shea butter.\n\nThere will also be information about the Settle Plastic Free group. The group recently undertook three evenings of litter picking with the local beavers\, cubs and scouts and ACE Settle\, to reveal just how much single use plastic is still being generated and thrown away.\n\nWe will also have cards for sale in aid of the Rainforest Fund.\n\nFlowerpot Festival (13th July-1st September): visit our Flowerpot Fairtrade Man (in Tillman Close) and Settle Plastic Free’s seal (highlighting marine plastic pollution) located in the Quaker Meeting House garden.

SUMMARY:Buy Nothing Day
DESCRIPTION:As an antidote to the super discounts available each year on ‘Black Friday’\, encouraging us to buy more – this is a day to end the culture of impulse buys that goes along with it. \nInstead\, we want to waste less\, make the most of the stuff we already own\, and cut our carbon footprint by buying nothing new – excluding essentials like food and medicine – today. \nAs the Keep Britain Tidy campaign says ‘if everyone on Earth lived like people in the UK\, we would need over two and a half planets to regenerate and absorb our waste. As a society\, we need to move to a circular economy that wastes less and puts more value on the things we already have’. \nFind out more about Keep Britian Tidy and their work in November towards buying nothing.

SUMMARY:World Soil Day
DESCRIPTION:As the United Nations says ‘our planet’s survival depends on the precious link between soil and water. Over 95 percent of our food originates from these two fundamental resources. Soil water\, vital for nutrient absorption by plants\, binds our ecosystems together. This symbiotic relationship is the foundation of our agricultural systems. \nHowever\, in the face of climate change and human activity\, our soils are being degraded\, putting excessive pressure on our water resources. Erosion disrupts the natural balance\, reducing water infiltration and availability for all forms of life. \nSustainable soil management practices\, such as minimum tillage\, crop rotation\, organic matter addition\, and cover cropping\, improve soil health\, reduce erosion and pollution\, and enhance water infiltration and storage. These practices also preserve soil biodiversity\, improve fertility\, and contribute to carbon sequestration\, playing a crucial role in the fight against climate change’. \nFind out more about activities in the UK\, check out the Soil Association.
