Barry White and Medact Leeds
Earlier this year, health workers and students in Leeds took action to stop the expansion of the Leeds Bradford Airport. The action spread and articles were posted on this web site. Medact Leeds thanks all who helped to push the government to review the decision.
The campaigning group continues to organise for health and climate justice. To start this off, we are excited to invite you to an online event on Thursday 1st of July, 7pm – 8.30pm. We will be discussing the Health for a Green New Deal campaign and developing plans for further local actions in Leeds. We look forward to seeing you there and building a thriving community of people involved in health and social care in Leeds! Many of the ideas discussed are likely to be of interest to us here.
Medact Leeds is a local group of healthcare workers which mobilise and campaign to allow all people in Leeds to truly achieve and access their right to health. They believe that it is the duty of healthcare professionals to take a broad view of health and part of their role in caring for patients must include fighting the inequalities within our society which creates and perpetuates poor health.
Medact Yorkshire was formed in 2017. Whilst their major focus is Fossil Fuel Free Health and divestment from fossil fuel companies, their members represent the spread of Medact interests including peace and security, migrant health and economic justice. They have been very involved in the anti-fracking campaign in the region and are delighted that fracking has been shelved (for the moment).
They have two parallel divestment campaigns targeting the county councils in East and North Yorkshire. Members from the North Yorkshire sub-group have recently joined forces with other campaigners to form Fossil Free North Yorkshire, to which ACE sends a representative. They would welcome anyone who would like to get involved in these campaigns, contact details are below.
Regular meetings are held, for education and sharing of ideas. Zoom meetings during the COVID-19 crisis have demonstrated how useful this approach can be for organising and spreading campaigning messages. To find out more please email yorkshire@medact.org or find us on Facebook
