XR Bank Holiday weekend of national actions

Extinction Rebellion (XR) has called on activists to ‘flood the streets’ this weekend in a series of mass-gatherings. A four-day ‘regional rebellion’ from today until Bank Holiday Monday will see protests across the UK, including in Leeds, Manchester, Bristol and London, It is encouraging protesters to take local action targeting the aviation sector, banks, the fossil fuel industry and petrol stations.

Wanted – your views on the future of the Dales

The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority has launched its second consultation on a local plan for the national park. The plan will set out policies that will shape what development can and can’t take place in our national park between 2023 and 2040. How many new homes a year should be built in the Yorkshire Dales National Park to sustain communities? Would you like new development to be ‘zero carbon’? Should planning policies support development that helps Dales farmers to intensify production? These are the main questions in this consultation, which represents the next step in the process of creating a new Local Plan for the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

The world is still in denial’ Greta Thunberg

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg met with Chancellor Angela Merkel yesterday (Thursday) urging her and other leaders to “treat the climate crisis like you treat any other crisis.”

“What we want is leaders. We want people to step up, to dare to step out of their comfort zones, to prioritize the future ahead of the now,” Thunberg told reporters after the 90-minute meeting.

SSE vows to produce ‘Just Transition’ plans to bolster science-based climate targets

SSE, an energy company based in Perth, has become the first UK energy firm to commit to developing ‘Just Transition’ plans, which will protect affected workers and communities as it aligns with the UK’s net-zero target. It employs more than 20,500 people, making it one of the ‘big six’ energy firms in the UK.
