Climate breakdown made the recent UK heatwave 10 times more likely, researchers have found. Analysis by World Weather Attribution (WWA) reveals that temperatures in the UK during the heatwave, when it hit 40.3C, were higher than those simulated by climate models. The researchers say extreme temperatures in Western Europe are rising faster than expected. The analysis was conducted by 21 researchers, including scientists from universities and meteorological agencies in Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, South Africa, Switzerland, the UK, the US, and New Zealand.

The recent heatwave, described as “apocalyptic” in Spain and France, where it lasted longer than here, extreme winds that brought down so many trees earlier this year, and severe flooding on an increasingly regular basis are all warnings of serious climate collapse induced by global heating.
In Settle, ACE’s Energy Group has been consulting the public locally on how best to decarbonise the energy we use in our homes and businesses. Big Oil versus the World is the story of what the fossil fuel industry knew about climate change more than four decades ago but did their best to stop letting us know. In the first TV documentary shown (subtitled Denial) on BBC 2 at 9.00pm on 21 July, scientists who worked for the biggest oil company in the world, Exxon, reveal the warnings they sounded in the 1970s and early 1980s about how fossil fuels would cause climate change – with the catastrophic effects we are now experiencing. In summary it reveals the lies oil lobbyist told to undercut democracy, to delaying and even stopping action against global warming. Just watch the early warnings given in the late 1980s and then see how the oil industry and their lobbyists fought back, supported by odious ‘specialists in denial’ and funded by a coalition (The Global Climate Coalition) including the oil companies!
